Lets go fishin

Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

It was hot last week, but the gulf was calm and the fishing was fantastic. The best bite was early on the outgoing tide. The red fish were hard to find at times, but other species like trout, mackerel, sea bass, and sharks were giving my clients non stop rod bending action.
The deeper flats due west of Aripeka was very productive last week. Drifting in 8 - 10 ft of water over spotty bottom and bouncing GULP's on a 1/4 ounce jig head boated good numbers of the previously mentioned species. I enjoy fishing these areas this time of year because it gives anglers constant action and you never know what will strike next. If the bite slows, I like to anchor and deploy a chum bag. This is sure bet to bring in the sharks and the occasional cobia.
TIP- When the bite gets hot, be sure to keep an eye on your leaders! I always replace them when I notice frays. Experience has taught me that when I don't, that's usually when the "BIG ONE" gets on the business end of a weak leader. A quick way to re-tie so you can get back to fishing ASAP is to tie on at least a 4 ft leader. This allows anglers to cut away the damaged portion near your hook or lure and re-tie with the non damaged portion right above. You can do this numerous times before you have to apply a new leader.
Scallop season is in full swing and limits are being boated on a regular basis throughout the entire region. This is a great way to cool off and catch a tasty meal. Target 4 - 6 ft of water from Bayport to Homosassa.

Good luck out there, and tight lines!
