Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summertime and the Fishing is Great.
The flats between Bayport and Chassahowitzka has been producing some fine redfish and seatrout. The best time to fish has been early morning or late afternoon. Now that the afternoon storms have been starting to be regular, I recommend a 6 AM starting time. Berkley gulp in the new penny and glow in the dark on 1/8 ounce jigs and Castaic jerk baits in the white and finger mullet color have been most successful.
My clients have been catching redfish in the 18-27 inch range. Sight fishing in the pristine clear waters has never been better. Nothing is prettier than seeing the copper bronze body shimmering in the sunlight as the fish is brought up to the boat. The tail turns blue when excited. The base of the tail may have one spot or multiple-I have seen as many as seven spots. Catch and release is always my choice, but a few clients choose to have table fare.
Since the net ban 15 years ago, the spotted sea trout fishing has vastly improved. Before the net ban it was hard to find a trout over 12 inches, but now fish over 20 inches are common. We usually limit out within the first hour or two with the range being between two and four pounds. Clients Julia and Tony Wahl Tony celebrated their twenty-ninth wedding anniversary on Sunday with a charter on Flats Slam Fishing Charters and quickly learned how to jig. Julia loves to fish but had never been able to land a fish prior to this trip. She hooked a seven pound seatrout. It was among the biggest I have ever seen. The couple kept eight legal seatrout for their celebration dinner.
In the beginning of June, Tarpon were plentiful and my clients enjoyed hooking up, even though we were targeting redfish. Now the population seems to have migrated and only a few resident tarpon are sighted.
Tight lines and screaming drags,
Captain Larry Roderick
