Spring Fever

Spring is here and the fishing is great, You can find fish from the shallow back country bays and creeks to the open flats in 3 to 10 feet of water. On my recent charters we have been catching a huge variety of game fish. Spanish mackerel are just taking over the grass flats and rock piles, The way I like to fish for the toothy mackerel is with a jig. D.O.A makes a long shank jig head in a variety of weight sizes a 1/8oz to 1/4oz is good. You can use any soft bait to rig on the jig head but I like Berkeley Gulp shrimp in the white and new penny color in the 3 inch size. Throw the jig out and work it on the fast side a 30lb leader is what I recommend. Trout are still in the shallow bays and also on the deeper flats top water lures work well and subsurface lures are producing some great catches. For a top water the Rapala skitter walk SW8 in the white, hot bone, silver trout, mullet, and red fish colors are all working great. The subsurface lures to try are a Rapala twichnrap in the hot olive and hot bone or a Mirr O Lure 17MR in the 808 color witch is a black back sliver side and orange bottom. Most of the trout are ranging from 17 to 26 inches. Red fish are schooling up in good sizes 6-20 fish per school and most of them are over the slot. The best bait has been cut pin fish on a 3/0 circle hook and a 20lb leader. I filmed a TV show with Capt. William Toney of Nature Coast Outdoors, we got a grand slam caught lots of big trout up to 24", red fish up to 33" and snook up to 28" all on lures but the red fish was taken on cut pin fish. What a great day Thanks Capt. William.
