Summer Fishing Action

Capt. Josh Fritz

The summer heat is here as you all know so getting out early and staying hydrated with water is the key to a good day on the water. When I'm planning my trips is like to leave the dock by 6am and be back by noon. Doing that I have plenty of time to get my clients on there targeted game fish. Planning ahead and knowing the winds and tides will make your summer fishing trip a lot easier.

Now for your inshore and near shore fishing report. Trout action is on the top of the list with red fish at second. Trout action is great on the deeper grass flats in 10 to 14 feet of water. What I look for in bottom is what a lot of anglers call spotty bottom witch consist of sponges, sea fans, rocks, sand, and grass. I find the trout are more tick in these areas. The way I fish for them is drift fishing throwing out 1/4 ounce jigs. Gulp shrimp in the new penny and white color are my top baits right now, you will go through a lot of them with sea bass so stock up on the Gulp.

Red fish are doing good on a early morning or late evening high tide. Target areas from Aripeka to Chassahowitzka around the out side islands, points, and creek mouths with a good current flow and mullet schools. Live bait is working best with me I like live green backs and pin fish rigged free lined. Cast the bait up current and let it drift into the strike zone. Most of the reds are in the middle to upper slot size.

Scallops are thick North of Bay port to Homosassa in 5 to 8 feet of water, just look for the pack of boats and you are in the area. Make sure you got the divers down flag up so other boaters know people are in the water.

Make sure you stop into Precision Tackle located in the Well Care plaza in Spring Hill, Dave will take great care of you and get you ready for the water.
