Hernando Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

May fishing report for Hernando County.
May is TARPON TIME in Hernando County, the migration of our tarpon are here and will continue to mid July. Tarpon can be found from 2 to 8 feet of water anywhere inside of the last marker of the channels. Tarpon is a patient mans game it takes countless hours and days hoping to hook up on the mighty silver king. These fish are huge average size is 80 to 200 pounds these fish work with the tides low tide the are further out high tide they are a little closer in. You can target these fish with many different tackle, fly fishing is what this area is know for many anglers from all around the word come to the Nature Coast for a chance of a world record tarpon. Fishing for them with fly equipment you will need a 12 weight fly rod outfit with a lot of backing I have close to 500 yards on my fly reels. Other ways are with spinning gear and soft plastics. Hogy soft baits in 10 and 12 inch lengths rig the soft baits with a 10/0 weedless hook or a 7/0 to 8/0 circle hook. The tarpon have to be a head on or quarter to shot for them to eat. Live bait works as well green backs, mullet, pin fish, and crabs will all work rig them with a 50 to 80 pound leader and a 7/0 circle hook. Cast in front of the fish wait till them eat and hold on.
We have a lot of guys the push pole there boats that is the most Quiet way of approaching tarpon. If you see them working fish please give them space I do my self they will appreciate it.
