Fishing in Homosassa

Capt. "Red Ed" Brennan
January 4, 2010
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in Homosassa

Happy New Year from Old Homosassa! We hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe holiday season and that Santa delivered all the new fishing toys you asked for!! We'd also like to thank everyone that fished with us in 2009, our most successful year of charters, and hope to see you all again in 2010!!! You can visit our website at www.HomosassaRedfish.com, to reserve your dates, as prime dates in March and April are already being booked.

The keys to successful January fishing here on Florida's Nature Coast is patience and to slow down your presentation. Winter time has arrived in Citrus County and the fishing is dictated by the wind and tides. The day will usually start by fishing the deeper holes of the rivers and back water creeks for bullish Redfish and tenacious Trout, hugging the edges of the potholes ready to ambush their prey. If the tides and winds are right we could have a captive audience in the potholes with non-stop rod bending action. As the temperature warms, it's also possible to go "toe-to-fin" with Sheepshead, Flounder, Bluefish and Sea Bass in pristine waters and uncrowded settings.

Are you a member of the CCA Florida? The Coastal Conservation Association represents the many challenges and issues facing recreational anglers in Florida. Lawsuits, grouper and snapper issues, no fishing zones and the future of our very right to fish are at stake. Annually, there are more than one million resident and non-resident recreational saltwater licenses issued in Florida and yet the CCA membership has hovered around the 10,000 mark. That is less than one tenth of one percent! The more people the CCA represents the more clout they have with the politicians who make the decisions that impact the sport we love. Please check the CCA website at www.ccaflorida.org, for additional details about the "Member Get a Member" campaign and on your application please list me as your Sponsoring Member. We should all take this as a personal challenge and act as if our children's ability to enjoy the very traditions we cherish are at stake!

What do most Professional Guides do when their not fishing with clients, they go fishing! Like most Guides, I have saltwater running through my veins and I always look forward to exciting adventures, fishing new places for different species. I'll be departing on January 24th for a three week South Florida fishing expedition, (yes even, Red ED, goes south for the winter), returning on February 14th. The adventure will start night fishing with Rudy Gomez, aboard his boat, CyberAngler.com, out of Miami Beach's Haulover Inlet, slow drifting shrimp for Tarpon. I also hope to sneak in one day of kite fishing offshore of Miami Beach, for Sailfish, Kingfish or Mahi-Mahi. As I've never fished in Biscayne Bay, I'm excited about spending a day on those famous flats sight fishing for one of my favorite fish to catch, Bonefish. After the Super Bowl, we'll continue south arriving in Islamorada to spend another day on the flats chasing Bonefish with long time friend, Captain Rich Mitchell. With as many times as I've been to the Florida Keys, I've never fished the reefs offshore of Islamorada and would love to tangle with some Tuna or Dorado or maybe even jump a few Sailfish on this adventure! Watch for the February fishing reports and pictures of South Florida's vast fishing potential. Let's go CATCHING, Captain Red ED
