Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report
As the season is about to close for a long 6 months the Gag fishing is just on fire. The cold water and heavy winds we have had for the past week doesn't seem to have slowed down the Grouper fishing in 30-40 feet of water. I just got done with back to back Gag trips the past two days and the fishing was much better than expected considering the poor water clarity and the dip in water temperature. The key was stinky bait.... Cut lady fish or lizard fish worked best while cut thread-fins did the trick as well. We ended up catching half our keeper gags on cut bait and half on pinfish, we just started using the cut bait first to bring the grouper in, then switched over to the live stuff to get those finicky fish that think cut bait is not good enough for them. I think we broke off about 6 times today on really big gags, one of the down sides of anchoring right on top of the rocks (which is what we have to do in dirty water to get them to bite most of the time.) Yesterday we got 3 fish over 12 pounds, the biggest going 17 pounds on the boca grip and today we had a 15 and a 13 pounder. Most of the gags were 23-24 inches that we kept, solid fish but not monsters. The key to keeping your spots productive in this depth range is to only keep one big gag and a couple of 22-24 inch fish from each spot, if you over fish it, the spot will "dry up" very fast. I mention this because I saw two different boats fish the same spot for about 3 hours as I hit 4 separate rocks in that area, always spread the pressure out over more spots if you can, if you don't have many spots, then troll and find some structure. We will be out there tomorrow and hopefully Monday and Tuesday(which will be great weather) so good luck to anyone trying to get one last gag trip in before it closes.
