Homosassa Fishing Report - 10/8/09

Capt. "Red Ed" Brennan
October 8, 2009
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Homosassa Trout Bar

Lydia Haas wins FREE Charter!!

We would like to thank everyone who came to visit with us at the Florida Sportsman Fishing & Boat Show in Tampa, Florida, September 26 & 27th. The show was a major success and we look forward to fishing with all our new friends here in our little piece of paradise, Homosassa, one of Florida's last best kept secrets! The talk of the show was the introduction of the "Redettes", who were warmly received, to say the least. Lydia Hass was the winner of the drawing at the Tampa show for the FREE full day charter. Lydia's charter is good for one to four people, and includes everything except lunch, beverages and gratuity, trip must be taken on a mutable agreeable date within one year from the date of the Tampa show. Due to the overwhelming response we will continue to do a drawing for a FREE charter at all future trade shows. Our next trade show will be the Florida Sportsman Fishing & Boat Show, at the Central Floirda Fairgrounds in Orlando, Florida, November 14 & 15th, 2009.

October has always been one of my favorite months to fish here in Homosassa. The weather is sunny, comfortable and the afternoon summer time showers are gone, it's a beautiful time to be out on the water. The Gulf's water temperature has now dropped to a frigid 75 degrees. The action on the water is explosive and the fish are feeding aggressively. This past Sunday, fishing at the "Trout Bar" north of Buckhorn Key, with Lisa and Captain Ben Marshall from Tampa and Sharon and Captain R. J. Reynolds from Homosassa we hit a smorgasbord, catching at least 15 different species! Our day started with a beautiful ride out the Chassahowitzka River, where we spotted a Bald Eagle sitting on top of a palm tree, scouting for his breakfast. Included in our smorgasbord of a catch, while drifting over the "Trout Bar" was over 20 Speckled Trout, though we did only keep 8 for the table. We were catching them so fast we just couldn't keep count! It didn't matter what color or flavor of Berkley Gulp we threw, they were getting whacked as soon as they hit the water. As we drifted west towards Black Rock Hole, we kept noticing huge explosions on the water but didn't know if it was Loggerhead Turtles, Spanish Mackerels, Sharks or Kingfish until Captain Ben spotted a 50 or 60 pound Tarpon rolling on the top. The Tarpon were also at the "Trout Bar" feeding on the Specs! Though we didn't hook one it sure did add to the excitment level. Almost daily for the last two or three weeks, I've been spotting resident Tarpon early in the morning on the Homosassa River especially around the shrimp docks. That's still an exciting way to start your day!

On another recent charter while fishing with Ralph Brown from Lutz, Rick Peabody, Steve Hotalen and Randall Bertrand from Tampa we also drifted across the "Trout Bar" for another outstanding day. We caught over 15 Speckled Sea Trout, (we only kept 6), 3 Gag Grouper and who knows how many other species we caught and released. After drifting the flats, we then headed inside a shallow creek on the incoming tide where we found a 21 inch Redfish that inhaled a piece of cut Pinfish as soon as it hit the water.

You can now watch for "Captain Red ED's" local Homosassa Fishing Reports, on the Average Angler Fishing Show with Glen Pla, on Bright House Sports Network, broadcast statewide on cable channel 47, Wednesday at 7 PM.
