Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing in the nature coast has been on fire the past few weeks, and it looks like it will only get better. Inshore, the reds are biting well on the outer islands, fish the mid to high tide and try to sight cast them with either gulp shrimp or live shrimp. I have heard multiple reports of schooling reds being sighted and I have seen a few my-self, especially around areas like fish creek, which has a ton of mangrove creeks, and bays that are full of reds and trout right now. If trout is what you are after then your best bet is to run out to 6-12 feet of water and look for patchy grass during the morning and through to the afternoon. We have been throwing a variety of soft plastic baits, if your fishing 5-7 feet of water use a 1/8 ounce DOA jig head and up grade to a ¼ ounce when you move out to deeper water. DOA paddle tails and Jerk baits have been working the best, and if that does not produce a hit switch it up to the good ole gulp shrimp. There is a ton of Sea Bass around and you will catch them while trout fishing out that deep, along with a random Gag or two. If you don't feel like running out that far, or have a small boat, the afternoon bite is really good around the outer keys for trout, they are destroying top water lures, and you can pick up a Snook on "accident" as well. I have been very happy with the amount of Snook that I have seen and caught lately, usually while I am targeting reds, or when I target them specifically in creeks and certain flats around Crystal River. On today's charter we stopped at a shallow water spring and pulled a 24-inch gag out of it using live pin fish. Now that was a hard fight… but we were able to get it in the boat for a few quick pictures and release it for another day; As soon as that fish hit the water, it shot right back into the spring, I wonder where he will be tomorrow…
On the offshore side of things, the red grouper are starting to move deeper, fish are thick in 60-70 feet of water and starting to thin out in 45-55, not that they are not there, but the extra ride is well worth it. The big question on everyone's mind right now is "Where are the Cobia??" Lots of people are going to be pre-fishing for the Cobia Big fish Tourney out of Mac Rae's of Homosassa, and right now we are catching them in 8 to 80 feet of water, it is anyone's game right now. We have been seeing them around wrecks and large rocks, and a few random Cobia hanging with big rays or turtles while running around inshore. Cade, one of the local guides has been catching some big cobia while inshore grouper fishing, he says to try some different artificial lures, anything that moves a lot, Cobia get excited when they have to work for their dinner, and really bite good when they have to "attack" your lure. Now is the time to fish, so get out here and join us on the nature coast for a wide variety of Inshore and Offshore fishing, all of which is heating up.
