Homosassa Trout and Redfishing Fun!

Capt. Mike Locklear
December 3, 2009
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

I enjoyed my time with Terry McMillan and Emit Pierce. On the last day of November we met at MacRae's Baithouse on the Homosassa River to try for trout and redfish at ten o'clock sharp. It was to be a beautiful day on the sea. Calm as glass we glided in between the channel markers, some in much need repair and some totally out of place in my opinion.

We stopped before the mouth, and the tide was near slack but going out. Emit picked up one small trout of about 10-inches. After a few more cast I realized I needed to move further out and south to the Refuge.

With sunny skies and water so clear you see the bottom 360 degrees. I cruised to one of my honey holes. Nada. Also, I zigzagged my course of the bay looking for trout, nada. There was fog on the horizon that had not burned off in fact it looked as though it was rolling in. So I went back to the bay and stopped near a set of islands along the coast line.

There, I saw a trout or two run off as I eased in with the trolling motor. The pelicans were diving apparently onto small ballyhoo. There were pinfish and some white bait in the 2-inch size. These birds were not shy and when they crashed into the water it was startling at first.

We switched to free-lining and corking it with a bait, shrimp, lizard fish or pinfish. As the tide rose to almost to slack water we had already boated 3 trout, all 19-inches. Then as I chummed with some day old shrimp, the redfish moved in and they each caught a slot sized redfish of 24" and 26".

It was time to wrap it up and head for the barn. Got back around three o'clock and cleaned their catch while the no-seeums' fed on us.

I had donated this day to Terry Steele of Habitat for Humanity who banks where my wife works at Regions Bank in Crystal Springs. I felt good to give something to the men and women who donate their time to build homes for the needy. It was an honor to spend the day with Mr. McMillan and Pierce, an old Navy veteran both avid anglers.

Also, I have to show the fine family of Randy and Kristie Schorr with sons Cole and Casey. The last hour of their day out on the river produced a catch of 5 keeper trout.
