Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Gulf's water is still too warm in the high 80 degrees to trigger a frenzy. Last week's cold front did not help too much cool the water down. BUT, it is just around the corner.

These conditions will improve this month as the water cools for speckled trout and spanish mackerel chase bait further inshore.

Look for huge flocks of birds working the surface as evidence of large bait pods on the flats. Where there is bait, there will be predators.
Within the large schools of bait fish you can find a smorgasbord of drag screaming fun including speckled sea trout, spanish mackerel, Grouper, bluefish and ladyfish or maybe even a cobia or two.
All of these species will feed aggressively as soon as the water cools to the mid 70's. And don't forget November is usually the better month for pelagics migrating.
As we drifted across the shallow flats south of Chassahowitzka Point with the wind and current, we managed to catch at least 10 sea trout with 8 keepers. We were catching and releasing them so fast I run out of toes and fingers to count them.
We drifted outside of the spotty bottom and started to catch junk fish including, inshore lizardfish, small sea bass, pinfish and ladyfish. This is real important information, so save some of the junk fish for bait.

The schools of Redfish should continue to concentrate until the water temperature cools, for then will leave to go spawn in deeper offshore waters. So it is October Reds and Trout as species one and two.

October 15 – (My Birthday) Orlando Coastal Conservation Association Banquet (CCA) I hear my good friend Rick Murphy will be there at the CCA Orlando event. Be sure to watch his TV program on the computer. His show is awesome and he has become THE MAN of many FANS.
Homosassa Redfish Guide Tip of the Week: Please don't be fooled by rank guides who offer discounts and free trips! Ask them if they are a member of the Homosassa Guides Association. If they are not a member, then they are not the most knowledgeable guides. I have seen these guides in action and they can not even dock a boat professionally.
