Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
December 31, 2001
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Writing about fishing is fairly easy. However, where I really have trouble is with my network communications and technical difficulties. Namely, Internet Service Providers. However, I can not blame them entirely as my personal computer also went on the blink. The drivers for my modem were outdated and this took over 14 days to correct. Finally, I think I have found an honest computer technician that will come to the house when these troubles happen again. The results should allow me to post my fishing reports once a week. I apologize to everyone for the lack of my reports.

Beginning with the first day of December, I began the month by performing a seminar to Scudder & Sons walk-in clients. The fly shop is located on U.S. 19 in Homosassa Springs next to Neffers Bowling and across the street from McDonalds. I trailered in the 18 foot Pro-Line flats skiff and demonstrated fly casting. One on one instruction was given to a few participants who attended.

On Monday, December third, I discovered some mudding action. Spanish mackerel, bluefish and trout had made areas of the otherwise clear gulf water cloudy from the rooting up of brown shrimp from the gulf bottom.

Catching limits of mackerel was no problem. The action lasted for 10 days until a cold front came in and drove the massive school south. Chuck and Ellen Beyerlein of Riverhaven had more than 60 bites and reel in dozens of fish up to 5 pounds. Ellen used the fly rod to catch hers while Chuck preferred the spinning rod.

My daughter Courtney and our friends Jennifer, Regina and Skyler Ritter did a half day on the muds and the all caught fish. Both Skyler and Regina caught the first fish of their lives and some big ones up to 4 pounds. One of those girls really have some lungs and my ears are still ringing from the yelping.

Dr. Paul Helstern and wife Connie bought a donated trip from the 1st annual Mike Hampton In Pitching Charity. The couple caught more than 75 fish including our limit of mackerel. Connie, an avid fisherlady from the blue waters is mad about the proposed manatee sanctuaries, saying that the area described will take away her favorite snapper hole.

Doug Lines and his brother-in-law, Jim had a 100 fish day. We began the day by catching a few gag grouper, one of which went 12 pounds. Doug caught him while casting a lipped lure in 8 feet of water. Then we went for the muds and the duo got hooked up every cast for a solid 3 hours. Top water lure strikes were awesome. Some of the fish were over 5 pounds and most averaged 3 pounds.

Now and for the last couple of weeks the gulf water has got cold. Most of the fishing has taken place in the Homosassa River. Redfish, rat size or to 15 inches is what we have been catching lately. Some black drum, mangrove snapper and sheepshead are also in the holes along rocky shorelines. Happy New Year!
