Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report
Bottom Fish Make The Day!
This report deals with fishing the shallow water rock piles. I have been fishing the shallow water rocks off Homosassa Bay in search of Key West grunts, black seabass and sheepshead.
This is what the party below requested and wanted to reel in as many fish as possible.
Terry Veseley, Eddie McLean, Glenn Minert and Gilbert Koch came aboard the Flatfisher 1 on the most coldest morning I have fished on in many a day. My boat’s deck was frozen with a layer of ice when I launched at MacRae’s Bait House.
The first rock I stopped at was on the edge of the state/federal line in about 10 feet of water. The ride out was cold enough that all but Eddie and I turned their back to the cold wind. When we arrived, I marked the spot with a little red buoy and then anchored with casting distance to the rock.
Glenn reeled in the first Key West grunt and from there the catching just got better and better. All the guys were catching fish as planned and we stayed at this same hole most of the day and nearly filled up the fish box with sheepshead and grunts. Both of these fish are real good eating on the dinner table and are not considered game fish.
In addition the sheepshead and grunts, the guys must have caught 100 porgies, or white bass as they referred to them. I thought this name sounds better than Porgy. After the tide went slack, I moved to another location to try for seabass and we caught 2 and that was it. I don’t know why our seabass population is so low. Maybe it is an off year.
Like I said in one of my previous fishing reports, you can catch fish when it is cold here, you just have to dress for it. Sheepshead and grunts like the cold water. Sheepshead will be around for the next couple of months.
Trout fishing has been pretty good lately, too and I will be talking about that soon. First, I have one more sheepshead report for you where we loaded the boat with fish over 5 pounds and that will be the subject of my entry.
