Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
February 27, 2003
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Citrus County Fishing is Red Hot!

Folks, I will give you a taste of what I do other than write about myself. Actually my wife complies this info and we submit it to the local paper each week. You can find this report each week by searching through Yahoo and inserting Citrus County Chronicle’s on-line newspaper. Once open, click on Sports and then Outdoors and you will see my article about Citrus County salt-water landings.

Last Friday seemed to be the day the grouper turned on near Homosassa Rocks. At least for Capt. Steve Burton and his party this was true. A 5 fish bag limit of gag grouper between 24-32 inches were kept aboard Burton’s charter boat for each of his 4 clients. Burton said they were trolling Mann’s Stretch 30’s in 38 feet of water.

Shallow water action also heated up this past week with catches of silver trout, blue fish and Spanish mackerel in 6-foot depths off Marker 4 of the Homosassa gulf channel.

My party caught over 75 fish in one day this past week.

Capt. Ernie Croft of Seatow also caught some keeper grouper in 12-foot depths while trolling and in-between sea rescues.

Bob Buning at MacRae’s in Homosassa said grouper fishing seems to be doing better in shallow water. Capt. Steve Burton caught 16 grouper last week. Bob Buning and Henry Morris went fishing last week. Bob caught and released at 24-inch trout on a jerk bait.

Bill at Bluewater Bait and Tackle in Homosassa said Bob and Terri White and Nancy Bushy caught 7 grouper up to 18 pounds while fishing inside 40 feet of water this past week. They were using sardines and life pinfish for bait. On another day, Bob White and Conrad Siedel caught their limit of grouper inside 40 feet of water. Bill said he has heard a lot of good trout reports and hopefully the fishing will be good on Saturday when trout fishing opens back up.

Junior at Skidmore’s in Crystal River said Jay Wilson, Bob Roberts and Terry Foster caught 9 grouper in 32 feet of water this past week. They were using sardines, mullet and Mann’s stretch white and red lures for bait. Junior also said Andy Johnson and Fred Williams caught two redfish up to 26 inches and six mangrove snapper on live shrimp.

The pair was fishing around Shad’s Island in the bay. Also, Terry Madron, Derrick Adams and their party caught 11 grouper in 35 feet of water. They were using cigar minnows and threadfin herring for bait.

Diann at D & D Bait and Tackle in Inglis said Bill Steehr and Kenny Garrett caught 10 grouper to 11 pounds 7 oz. while fishing in 70 feet of water this past week. They were using frozen sardines and pigfish for bait. Capt. Ky Lewis took Bill Schoenherr and his son Tom who was visiting from IL and Bennie Morris last week. They caught 16 grouper up to 16 pounds and were fishing 31 miles offshore using sardines and squid for bait.
