Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear

Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fall Air Brings Trout into Homosassa Flats

Fishing Homosassa flats has been pretty good so far this month of October. Trout showed up late last month in good numbers. Barry Kaplan and Bill Futch of Ocala had a huge time landing some really nice redfish on an afternoon outing. Barry tries to fish with me once a month and really enjoys the outdoors.

Eddie Demmi of Ocala came aboard the Flatfisher 1 for the first time last month for some redfish. He brought along a buddy who also is a fishing guide. They had a great time and reeled in numerous redfish. More than a dozen in the 30 inch range were photographed and released.

Cotton States Insurance Company was here for their annual meeting and they had a large time with 5 guides of the Homosassa Guides Association. Lee Tatum, Mike Wheeler and Daves Steed had a ball fishing with me. They caught and released more than 30 redfish. Most were just the fun size, however, the group did bring in 3 redfish in the 25 to 25 inch range. The other guides did well too with their limit of redfish.

Long time client and CCA Hernando board member Scott Browning, Gus and Joe McDonald of Browning Insurance Agency landed 8 bull redfish to 10 pounds. Joe is coming back to battle with the bulls again later this month.

Jim Fowler and business partner Doug of Skelly Electric from Kansas skipped their annual conference to do some fishing. The pair began by bending their rods on some hefty oversize redfish. After a great morning of constant action, we moved to the Chaz flats for some excellent trout action. They caught their limit and mine of 15 beautiful spotted sea trout in just a few hours casting pearl white Cotee jigs.

David Lang and his wife Lanie had a super time sight fishing redfish up to 32 inches. Before today, Lanie had never caught a redfish. Her first one ate a live shrimp and it measured 29 inches and weighed about 10 pounds. She later caught another over sized redfish and David is still struggling to catch up. Which he did by landing two keepers in the 26 inch range using a Johnson Gold spoon. He topped the day off by landing a huge 32-inch 12 pound redfish.

The Lane Packing Company of Georgia brought their crew and business friends in for a two day fishing trip. With five guides, the group had a fine time and caught a fair amount of trout and redfish. The group had a shore dinner prepared by the guides and enjoy each others company on the island. Judge Bump always brings a pound cake for desert. Fresh fish, hushpuppies, home made coleslaw and beans make a fine meal. Duke Lane III, Phillip Ridgon and Steve Lane landed their limit of redfish to 27 inches and released several more too big to keep. Duke Lane Jr. and David Lane hosted the group while staying at MacRae’s.

A 4 man limit of 20 spotted sea trout and 3 redfish were bagged by John Euart and friends of the Homosassa Fishing Club. Kathleen Euart landed a 27 inch redfish while being guided by Capt. Marvin Williams.

Bill Law of the Homosassa Fishing Club brought his family down and they had a great time. Joyce, Laura and Phillip fished with me. Favorable tides were borderline for redfish, but Phillip did manage a right on the line 27 inch redfish that was planned for the dinner table. The trio landed another 15 fun size redfish which were under the 18 inch mark. To complete the dinner menu, 10 spotted sea trout between 16-21 inches were bagged.

Look for excellent trout and redfish action to continue throughout October.

Remember if you are too busy to go fishing, you are just too busy!
