Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
April 13, 2004
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Homosassa Fishing Hampered By Windy Weather

Homosassa flats fishing has been a challenge because of the high winds and numerous fronts. I could not get out yesterday as rains and winds to 60 miles per hour kept me in. It just was not doable.

As I write this report today, the winds have been blowing more than 25 miles per hour. We have had more than our fair share of high winds. We finally got some much needed rain to knock down some of the pollen in the air. I am ready for all this adverse weather to end.

Jimmy Austin of Atlanta is here and the guys went out today a half day and caught a few trout, drum and redfish. It was too brutal to stay out and fish in those conditions, so they called it off after a half day fighting the wind.

The past week I have had way too many cancellations due to bad weather. I took off Easter Weekend to be with the family and go to church, it was beautiful for fishing. I have no regrets about that because I am fairly certain the fair weather pattern will repeat itself this upcoming weekend.

April 1 started out to be too windy to fly fish as a front came through and brought down the water temperature. Another cancellation.

Dennis Atkins of North Carolina hosted a group of 15 men for their annual fishing trip. With 5 guides and windy conditions chilly waters kept the fish from really tearing it up for all. However, Capt. Fred Lyles stayed out and managed his limit of 20 trout, the next day he had 16 and was top boat the second day. Capt. Mark Zorn had a good catch of mackerel and won honors of most keepers the first day with 30. Each angler had two nice bags of fish to take home for dinner. Overall it was a successful trip. We caught 12 trout in two days, that is not great, but under the conditions it was better than a skunk.

The latter half of March was a good couple of weeks. Bill Lundy of Vulcan Materials brought a group of 11 fisherman and they caught a variety of fish with 5 guides, mostly trout and mackerel. All the fish were weighed and the total weight was around 250 pounds.

Tom West of the Atlanta Fishing Club hosted a group of guys for some fine Homosassa flats fishing and shore dinner eating with Capt. Mark Zorn and myself. The first morning was a fish catching smorgasbord that included sea bass, Key West Grunts and Spanish mackerel. After a tasty shore lunch we returned a caught 11 trout during the afternoon. 10 of the trout bit in the last 45 minutes of the trip.

The future holds the answer to how the fishing is going to shape up. Fish don’t care about the wind; however, it is the one element you need some of but not a lot of. King Mackerel and Cobia are here as I have heard of some nice catches. Good Fishing!
