Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
March 8, 2005
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

For Burke Wilson II and his two sons, Charles and Chase, ages 17 & 15 respectively yesterday’s fishing trip turned out to be a classic from the pages of Atlanta Fishing Club history.

As we idled down the Homosassa River and cruised through Petty Creek and Mason Creek, the morning started out with sunny skies and light southwest winds. With a shore lunch in mind, we concentrated our efforts on providing some meat for the table.

As it turned out, Chase was nicknamed the “Meat Man” as he landed two of four spotted sea trout that we kept for the shore lunch. Untold dozens of smaller trout were caught and released and provided great action and proves that the trout fishery is in great shape for the future.

Upon arrival to the Club Island on False Channel of the Homosassa River, the four of us loaded up the chairs, provisions and cook stove to the camp site. It was here that Burke talked about the times when his Grand Father took him fishing with my Grand Father back in the early 60’s which were cherished times. Many other stories were exchanged.

Because the world has changed with events never heard of back in the old days, we both realized how lucky we are to be enjoying the great outdoors. Each moment is to be treated as though it might be our last, as none of us know what fate has in store for us.

With the shore dinner completed, we headed back out for some redfishing, which turned out to be just great with action for all three of the Wilsons’. About 10 reds were caught and released to fight another day. One was a nice one of about four pounds that Burke landed. We tried with gold spoons, but fresh shrimp proved to be the best bait.

Overnight a windy front swept across the area and produced 30 knot gusts and today at 11:30 am, the wind is still blowing plenty hard, thus postponing any trip I might have had. Such is life on the home front of the Homosassa River.
