Fishing Report for Homosassa, Florida

Capt. Mike Locklear
January 18, 2006
Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter fishing in Florida is a hit and miss game. Cold and warm fronts dictate the bite, but this column is about what actually took place since the New Year rolled around.

On January 2, Brother Royce Williams of Rocky Mount, N.C. joined Henry Morris and me for a great day of catching spotted sea trout. We landed over 50 but kept 10 for dinner. The skies were gray and the winds were up but a warm front provided a falling barometer and the fish were hungry.

Brian and Nick Ruane of Crystal River went out with me on January 5 and tried the redfish with little luck. We caught plenty of trout and kept 4 nice ones for dinner. Nick landed a nice 21-inch trout that looked to weigh about 3 pounds. Thanks guys for the trip!

On January 6, Justin Dicks and his sidekick Jeff of Crystal River joined me for some creek fishing and we landed several redfish during a severe cold snap that gave the trout lockjaw.

On January 7 Tyler and J.R. ages 12 along with 13 year old Rueben all of Homosassa went with me to the hot water discharge for some fun and they landed over 30 redfish. It was a nasty cold and windy day for an adult to be out. But heck, the kids and I enjoyed it.

The week of the 9th, I have been doing a lot of duck hunting sometimes all by myself and other days with friends of the area. Bagging my limits most every time of red heads is easy. This is an afternoon hunt and it is quite enjoyable to watch the sun go down with all the clouds in beautiful colors of orange, blue, lavender and red. Victor Edwards of Homosassa shot his limit of redheads and worked with his new lab, Jake. Contact me if you are interested in doing some duck hunting.

This past weekend I was invited to a private plantation in lower Alabama to shoot a trophy deer. While there was great fellowship with friends, fun, food and plenty of deer for everyone else, I managed not to see a buck. Just my luck!

Yesterday I fished with two foreigners from Europe and we had a great time. We tried for tarpon and snook in the river but had no such luck. They managed to catch a pile of mangrove snapper and couple of trout. The water is way too cold in the gulf now except for sheepshead and the winds kept us inside and limited to river fishing.

When times allows I go fishing alone and have a great time catching my limit of trout. This is great fun and provides for a nice meal or two when I am in the mood for a fresh fish. Bass Assassin 6-inch jerk baits on blood red Diachi hooks is what worked for me the other day. I lost as many as I caught. I was fishing the flats just south of the St. Martins River in about 5 feet of water.
