This Week's Fishing Report

Although Tropical Storm Debbie is producing squally weather across the southern states, the fishing has been first-rate for those adventurous souls willing to get their feathers wet. It's a bit more of a challenge finding fish with windy and cloudy conditions, but once located, they have been hungry and happy.

Water levels in the Indian River Lagoon system a good foot above normal, allowing easy access to the edges of the shoreline, and that is exactly where the fish have been holding.

Before the summer squall (TS Debbie) blew into the Gulf of Mexico, the sea trout bite was really good and still remains the same with my primary lure choice being the DOA Shallow Running Baitbuster and Zara Spook Jr. Both lures have been very productive, but the Baitbuster retrieved across the top of the water works best in area of floating sea grass.

Yesterday, had the opportunity to fish with Justin Carrier and his client Jim, and we opted to fish in spite of the adverse weather conditions. At first I tried to cancel the trip, and I'm glad Justin talked me into going, because there was no one on the water at all and the fish were happy, stupid and hungry. We started fishing around 5 a.m. and had two over slot redfish in the boat before first light, and we ended up catching twelve redfish with only one being within the slot, the rest were over 30 inches. It was just one of those special days.

As for lures, our best results came from fishing DOA Shallow Running Baitbusters, and Super Spook Jr's.

As always, if you need more information or have any questions, please contact me.

Good luck and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
