Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
This past week on the Lagoon was a bit on the cool and windy side. Well, ok, it was down right cold! Some of the coldest weather we have had here in many years that is for sure. In turn, water temperatures are hovering around the low 50s in many areas. Look for protected areas in the sun and deeper areas that have warmer water. Some areas have water temps above 60. When you find these areas they will probably be holding fish. Most fish have moved deep to find these tolerable water temps. Trout are ganged up in some of the deep channels and dredge holes. Look for deep areas in close proximity to grass flats and fish these areas very slowly with jigs, DOA shrimp, soft jerk baits, or live shrimp. The key is to fish slow.
Deep areas also are holding ladyfish and jacks. These usually aggressive fish have slowed down with the cold water temps. Best success has come using soft-bodied jigs and DOA shrimp fished very slowly along the bottom. They are hitting very lightly so make sure you keep a tight line so you can feel them. If you miss the hit they will drop the bait.
Sheepshead are around the Inlet and they have been active. Live shrimp free-lined under a few split shots (to get it near the bottom) have produced some good catches. Some trout are using the deeper areas in the Inlet as well.
Redfish have been very hard to come by on the Tight-Lines. Warmer and calmer weather should find redfish moving into shallow water, and combined with the very clear water conditions, should produce some better catches. I am ready and waiting.
Here’s looking forward to warmer and calmer weather in the near future. Until next week keep warm, be safe (hypothermia sets in quick in 50 degree water), and keep casting.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron.
