Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
The Warmth Has Returned!
This week on the Lagoons was again a test of will to a certain extent. The beginning of the week was windy and only a little warmer. Consequently, fish and fishing in the Sebastian area have been slow to recover. Warmer weather has just arrived and water temps are starting creep back into the mid-60s in the afternoon. As a result, fish are becoming more active. The only consistent action early in the week was for ladyfish and jacks. Most of the action came on Cotee glitter shads fished relatively deep and slow. Just today, the fish started getting back to their aggressive selves hitting crystal minnows hard.
Trout action early in the week was very slow. Today, the action picked up a bit. The largest fish (27-28 inches) were taken on the flats in the afternoon in approx. 2 ft. of water on jerk baits fished very slowly through the grass. Smaller fish were in 3 to 5 feet of water and they hit live shrimp. Redfish have basically disappeared. I have seen a few fish on the flats but they have not cooperated.
A trip to Mosquito lagoon did not produce a fish. This is not surprising given that the wind was out of the NE at 15-20, it was cloudy, and the water temperature was 54 degrees. Most everyone fishing the area was in the Haulover canal and not much was happening there either.
Warmer weather seems to be consistently in the long range forecast. If water temps continue to rise into the mid- to upper- 60s fish should continue to get more active and re-establish their regular feeding patterns that were so rudely interrupted by the very cold weather. Time will tell what effect the cold water had on the snook population around these parts. It did not seem to be as bad as it could have been. The cold weather came gradually giving the fish time to move and/or adjust.
Until next time, keep casting, and hopefully catching!
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
