Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather - Make Up Your Mind
If the weather would figure out what it wants to do maybe the fish will too. We had a brief warm-up and calm-down (the wind that is, not my temper) mid-week, and the trout and reds turned on for what seems now like a split second. At least the water temps made some head way into the low 60s. With the latest cold front, although not nearly as strong as the past several, the trout and reds have curtailed their feeding again. The winds also have made it less than fun to be out. A few trout are coming on jerk baits fished slow in 2-3 feet of water during the afternoons if you can fish the areas they are using under the current wind conditions. A few large trout are in backwater areas, but they have been very reluctant to feed, and are very spooky given the clear water conditions. Small trout have been taking live shrimp fished in 5 to 7 feet of water. These fish are running 8-12” with a few keeper 15 inchers thrown in.
The jack and lady fish bite simply has been awesome. The fish have been large and energetic. Thank God! When you find them they have been hitting top-water baits with gusto. A ton of fun! However, they also will hit sub-surface baits as well. No surprise here. Jacks and lady fish are not known for being too picky when they are hungry. Tarpon have been showing themselves here and there, but their feeding has been sporadic and tough to calculate. The fish are running small in the 10-15 lbs range.
Blue fish have been very active just outside the Inlet. When you find them, they will hit anything thrown at them. What a blast, but be careful navigating the Inlet. The changing winds, tides, and seas can add more excitement to your trip than you bargained for.
Spring is coming and so is some awesome fishing. Until next time.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron.
