Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian River Report-Sebastian

The boat and fishing traffic brought on by the holiday weekend has caused the fishing on the Indian River to drop off a bit. Early mornings and late evenings have been producing some nice trout and a few redfish and snook. Top-water action has been good early with the SOF-Spoon and jerk baits producing a few fish later in the day. Fish the baits slow if only a little bait is in the area you are fishing. Try a faster retrieve if bait is very abundant. Fish have been shallow early, in as little as 6 in. of water, to around 3-4 feet later in the morning and afternoon. Redfish have been scattered around the islands, shorelines, and flats. Snook have been active around mangroves and islands. Morning west winds have allowed me to get out the inlet and along the beaches to fish the glass minnow pods for Spanish, tarpon, and kingfish. The Spanish action has been great and the boat traffic does not matter as much. Tarpon have been very difficult to find, but their numbers should increase over the next few week. The Southern Coastal Angler team did well over the weekend on kingfish, with most of the fish coming offshore of Ft. Pierce Inlet. We also boated several dolphin and a sail to boot. Live blue runners and greenies are the baits of choice for the tarpon and kingfish, while anything artificial that flashes will catch the Spanish as long as it is small in size. Just look for bird and bait activity and you will find the predators feeding on them. Please, approach the bait with some stealth, however. Running up on the bait causes the bait and the fish feeding on them to sound. This makes it difficult for everyone to stay on the fish and spooks the tarpon altogether.

Until next week, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely, Capt. Ron Bielefeld
