Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Indian River Report-Sebastian Area
Sorry for the long period between reports. I have been busy fishing and doing all the other stuff life throws at you. Early mornings and late evenings have been productive for trout, snook, jacks, and ladyfish around the Sebastian/Wabasso area over the past few weeks. Some days have produced countless fish while other have been rather poor. The best action has come during periods when heavy current is present early or late in the day. Fish around islands and the edges of flats and get ready. Overall, evening bites have been better, especially if it has been breezy in the afternoon. The chop keeps the sun from penetrating the water and the fish more active. Top-water plugs, SOF spoons, and Crystal minnows have worked well. When the sun is still fairly high fish have been in deeper water (4-6 ft.), but very shallow flats have produced the larger fish during dim light. Glass minnows and finger mullet have been attracting the fish to these areas. Do what you can to mimic the size of the bait present in the area you are fishing. If there is a lot of bait, work the lures faster or more aggressively. You need to single your bait out from the rest of the natural bait. The murky water has made it almost impossible to sight fish for redfish, but a few fish are being caught on the shallow flats early and late in the day. Jerk baits and top-water plugs have produced a few fish.
Offshore, the action for kingfish, Bonita, dolphin, and a sailfish or two has been fair to great. Spanish sardines fished off the Bethal shoal have produced the most consistent action, but larger kings are roaming other areas of bait concentration near the Ft. Pierce and Sebastian Inlets. Slow trolling or drifting will produce strikes. If the current is running, drifting can be extremely affective.
Until next time, Tight-Lines to all
Sincerely, Capt. Ron
