Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian River Report - Sebastian Area
Sorry for missing last week, but I was super busy. The fishing the past two weeks has been up and down as has the weather. Mornings have been calm with the winds coming on strong in the early afternoons. The mainstay this week has been trout, jacks, and ladyfish, with a few reds mixed in. With water temps running in the mid- to upper 60s the large numbers of fish (trout, jacks, and ladies) have come in 2.5 to 3 feet of water around structure like islands, shorelines, and piers. Larger fish are still holding in shallower water and have been most active in late afternoon if you can fish these areas with the higher winds.
The trout, jacks, and ladyfish have been hitting jig and grub combinations bounced along the bottom. Vary the speed of your retrieve to get the best results. Late in the afternoons these fish have been hitting top-water over 2-3 feet of water, and this technique has produced the larger fish. Use a slow walk-the-dog retrieve. The reds have come around island structure in shallow water early and late in the day. The reds took jigs and grubs.
Some tarpon have been active in the Sebastian River toward dark. We boated one 20 lb. fish this past week on a jig and grub combination if you can believe that. When you find fish rolling try DOA shrimp, a large live shrimp, or finger mullet to get their attention. Unless you are the adventurous type, I suggest using larger tackle than the 8 lb test line and light action rod we boated the one fish with. No sure bets when it comes to tarpon, but you never know.
Until next time,
Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
