Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
This past week saw water temps on the lagoon drop below 70 degrees for the first time this fall. As a result, a few flounder have been showing up in the inlet. The gulf flounder or 3-spot have been running in the keeper size range for the most part. The flounder run should get better as a few more fronts come through the area and drop the temps again. Our flounder have been taking gold shad-tails on an orange ¼ oz jig.
The trout have been scattered to abundant on the flats this past week. When there has been a chop on the water, the trout have been taking top-water plugs with gusto. During calm periods jigs have produced the majority of the fish. Our trout have been taken in from 1 to 4 feet of water over grass. We did not catch any giants this past week, but several were in the 20-inch range. This week was one of those periods when the fish wanted things presented to them just so, or they did not hit. If you did not use just the right technique in presenting your bait you caught very few fish. Lesson to learn is, pay attention to the details of bait presentation to maximize your catch.
Redfish have been more abundant on the flats this past week. The fish we caught were feeding on crabs and mullet so they were willing to take both DOA shrimp and top-water plugs. Top-water plugs were most effective when there was a good chop on the water. The Redfish we found were in very shallow water about 1 foot deep. The reds seemed to prefer a very slow retrieve of the top-water plugs.
Jacks, ladyfish, grouper (small), and 1 snook filled out our catches this past week. While the water temps are in the low 70s to upper 60s I will be concentrating my efforts on the flats in pretty shallow water.
Tip-of-the-Week: When fishing for flounder in the Inlet, drift, don’t anchor. Give me a write if you desire more details on the technique I use to catch these great eating fish.
Until Next Time, Tight-Lines to All!
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
