Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report -Sebastian Area
The past two weeks have seen good weather, bad weather, and everything in between. Including heavy rain (51/2 inches) and a tornado. The fishing has been good when the weather would allow us to fish in a decent manner. Water temps have been up and down with the air temps but remain in a good range for fishing given that it is only a few days before Christmas.
Trout have been active in shallow water (1-2 feet) especially later in the afternoon. Top-water plugs, jigs, and a new bait (well new to me) have been producing some fish to 6 lbs. Hey, I can’t give out all my secrets. Redfish have been frequenting the same areas as the trout and have been taking the same types of baits. Look for grass and some bait fish to find the larger fish. Smaller fish are somewhat concentrated in the deeper holes around islands and the drop-offs along the intercoastal canal. Jigs have been taking these fish.
Flounder are still in the Inlet and taking jigs drifted west and south of the channel. A few reds, blue fish, and pompano are also using these areas and hitting the jigs. Look out for some nice grouper as well. Most are too small to keep but they are fun to fight.
The Sebastian river has been good for Jacks, ladyfish, and a few small tarpon on the days when the lagoon has been difficult to fish. Try jigs, DOA shrimp, crystal minnows, gold spoons, and top-water plugs. The tarpon have been most cooperative later in the afternoon. If you see the fish rolling or feeding on passing schools of bait try throwing a spook. You probably will not be disappointed.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and an ubundance of Tight-Lines in the coming year!
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
