Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report - Sebastian Area
The fishing this past week was influenced greatly by the weather. We had another cold front come through and the fishing has been best from late morning on through the end of the day as the water warmed just a bit. Trout have been abundant around the flats and along the edges of the Intercoastal channel in 4-5 feet of water. The fish in these areas have been small. These smaller fish are taking jigs. Even with the colder weather, some larger trout have been cooperating. These fish are hanging in the very shallow areas later in the day. You have to work for these fish, but they are there and they are feeding off and on. If you want a 5 pounder or better spend some time in the shallows with jerk baits and top-water. Work these baits very slowly and deliberately. Later in the day has been best. A few reds have been hanging around on the same flats as the larger trout and taking the same baits so be prepared.
Jacks and Ladyfish are abundant in the deeper areas where the smaller trout are hanging out. They are hitting anything with a lot of flash. If you want to catch a bunch of fish just go up into the Sebastian River and find a deep hole. While fishing these areas for jacks and ladyfish venture over to the banks every once and a while where this is some cover and pitch a few for snook. The fish are there and will respond. Also, try trailing a piece of cut mullet while you are fishing for the jacks and ladys. Use a bit larger tackle for this trailer, because what you might hook up with could be 30 or more pounds, a tarpon that is.
Tip of the Week: Even thought the water may be cold fish shallow water for larger fish.
Until Next Time – Tight-Lines to All
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
