Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report - Sebastian Area
The fishing the past week or so has been good at times and very difficult at other times. The weather has really dictated what could be accomplished on the water. Another front is on the way and it is supposed to get pretty cold again. This should drive the bulk of the fish into deeper water for most of the day, because very little warming will take place throughout the day.
Small trout have been abundant in the deeper water around islands, flats, and channels. Jigs and live shrimp free-lined have worked well to take these fish. A couple of other techniques have worked well to catch a few larger fish, but hey, a guy has to have some secret weapons. Work the jigs with a brisk jigging action, but do not move it along the bottom too fast if you can help it. I know, the wind never listens to me either. If I could control the weather I surly would catch more fish, but hey, if I had powers like that I doubt I would be fishing much. Ok, so I would. I can’t help it it’s an addiction. Ladyfish have been abundant in the same areas as the trout. Light line has produced the most trout, but watch out for the ladyfish, they can cut the lighter line very easily. I am glad jigs and tails are relatively inexpensive.
Some snook and reds have been taken but they have been hard to come by the past week. Really, I have been concentrating on trout to keep the action on. Larger trout are still to be found in shallower water of 2-3 feet, but late in the day, and if the weather gets very cold for a long time these fish will probably shut down altogether.
The key this coming week will be to keep warm and dry. Hopefully the wind will not blow too hard.
Until next week, Tight-Lines to All.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
