Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
The fishing this past week remained spotty. Early mornings and late evenings were the most productive periods of the day. Wind and cool water temps continued to be bothersome. Water temps in the mornings have been in the low 60s, warming the to mid- to upper 60s by late evening.
I have been looking for larger fish the past few trips and have found a few in very shallow water (1 ft or so). This morning we boated 2 nice bluefish, 2 trout around 4 lbs., and 1 red about 10lbs in very shallow water (barely driftable) before 8:30am. These fish took larger mullet imitations worked slowly just under the surface. Some small trout have been holding in deeper water and they have been taking DOA shrimp and Riptide Weedless shrimp worked slowly along the bottom. The deeper water I have been fishing has been located around spoil islands and other structure such as docks.
Although the fishing has not been spectacular we continue to pick up nice fish on each trip. Water temps are going to have to get a bit higher (into the low 70s) and remain there for more than a few days before the fishing is going to get really good. Until then, the catching will remain spotty on the flats, some days good and some slow. If you want to catch the larger trout and some reds go very shallow and work larger baits slowly.
Until Next Time, Tight-Lines to All
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
