Central Indian River Lagoon

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report - Sebastian Area

The fishing the past few days has been fairly good. Most of the fish are coming early and late in the day with scattered action throughout mid-day. The larger trout have been the most finicky, as they always seem to be, with the best action very early and late. Smaller trout have been taking jigs in deeper water (3-5 ft) around island and edges of flats. Top-water plugs such as spooks and chug-bugs have been working well early over shallow grass and along the edges of the shallows. I have been switching to jigs and jerk baits around 9 am to keep some action coming.

Redfish have been active from first light through mid-morning in shallow to medium depths around the various flats. Various soft plastic jerk baits have been the ticket for these fish. Most to the fish have been around the 6-10 lb range, which is great fun on light tackle.

We have been finding quite a few very large jacks rampaging the shallows early and late. One of the fish we boated recently was in the 20 lb. class. That is a big jack for the flats this time of year. Well, heck, for any time of year. Many of the fish have been over 10 lbs. When you hook into a jack that big on medium-light tackle you are in for a fight you won’t soon forget. Your aching muscles the next morning will make you remember!

Tarpon and snook have been active in the Sebastian River the past week or so. Again, early and late have been best, but some fish have been cooperating throughout the day when there has not been too much disturbance from boat traffic. Soft plastics and top-water plugs have taken the snook. Swimming plugs and live mullet are best for the tarpon. I will have more info to report soon. Until then, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
