Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report - Sebastian Area
The fishing this past week has been good during the very early mornings for trout and some snook. Top-water plugs have been productive during these times fished over the edges of grass flats and around mangrove points and islands. Most of the fish have been in the 18 to 20 inch range, with a few larger fish coming now and again. After about 7 am, the trout bite has been slowing, with fish preferring jigs and sub-surface plugs like Crystal minnows. We have caught trout throughout the day during most trips, however, we have had to work for our fish.
The Sebastian area does not support very large numbers of redfish like the Mosquito Lagoon and upper Indian River, so redfish can be tough to find. We have been able to catch a few redfish, but the reds have definitely been hit and miss. There are a few flats that have been holding reds consistently, but some days they just have not wanted to eat. Most of the reds I have seen have been along mangrove shorelines, and the weather we have had lately (wind) has made it difficult to affectively fish these areas. Shrimp imitations have been the most effective for the reds.
Large jacks and ladyfish have been very abundant around the edges of flats. Although these fish do not make good table fair, their fighting ability will make a trout and even some reds feel quite inept. So, we have had a lot of fun messing with these fish during the late mornings and early evenings when the bite for other species has been slow.
The snook and tarpon are active in the Sebastian River. My last few trips have not produced much action, but the fish are there and all it takes is to keep after them. The hook-ups will come.
If we can get into a more stable weather pattern, the fishing should improve. As long as we continue to have such changeable weather the catching will remain sporadic and tough to predict; until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
