Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
Fishing this past week or so has pick-up quite a bit. Trout have been very active during the dark moon phase early and late in the day. The larger females are now using he shallow flats more, as evidenced by us taking several fish in the 5-7 pound range over the past 3 days. These fish are taking top-water plugs such as super spooks and chug-bugs early and late, and Riptide brand weedless shrimp and jerk baits in the new penny color later in the mornings. Fish the Riptides with a medium pace on the bottom through the grass to elicit the maximum number of strikes. On several trips we have boated over 20 fish in a few hours.
Redfish have been active during mid-mornings and late in the evenings along mangroves and on the grass flats. As usual, there have not been a ton of fish around, but they have been in our bag fairly consistently over the past couple of weeks. A few fish have come on top-water spooks, but the majority have come on Riptide weedless shrimp and jerk baits in the golden glow color. Again, fish these baits along the bottom over the sand and through the grass. Very your retrieve speed with these soft plastics, it appears that some like it fast and other like it slow.
The snook action has not been too hot lately, at least for me. A few fish have been taking top-water plugs over the flats and near mangroves, but nothing spectacular. I have targeted my usual snook areas and have had little success. Smaller tarpon are active in the Sebastian River. Live bait is the way to go here. Free-line a small mullet around rolling fish in the late evening or early morning to get a hook-up or two.
The weather, except for a few thunderstorms has been great lately. I hope it continues along with the good fishing. Well, fishing is always good. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
