Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
Well, the trout bite has gone to the birds in the Sebastian area. I was on some nice fish for about a month and then the rains came and things changed. Not sure where the fish went at this point. I am still picking up a few nice fish each morning and evening, but the medium to smaller fish that can make for some fun continuous action just do not seem to be around in any number. For the most part, the numbers of trout are way down this spring and early summer compared to last year. The hard winter may have something to do with that. The trout we are catching are taking top-water plugs early and late in the day and Rip Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and Flats Chubs (a new bait from Rip Tide) later in the morning and during early evenings. Work the jerk baits at a medium pace through the grass in 2-4 feet of water. Add some weight to the jerk baits to keep them down near or on the bottom.
I have been catching a few snook. This morning we boated two nice fish and lost a larger fish all on top-water plugs along the mangroves. Chug-bugs and spooks were the producers.
Redfish have been scattered along mangroves and over the flats. No big schools, just a fish here and there. The Rip Tide jerk baits have been the ticket to catching these fish. All and all, a typical trip the past few days has netted 2 or 3 snook, 1 red, and a few trout. Nothing spectacular, but that is fishing. The bright moon period is coming up and I will be out during the early mornings again to see if the bite is any better. Not much competition from other anglers or disturbance from boaters when you fish this time of night. The last bright moon period produced some awesome fish (trout and snook). Until next time Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
