Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
The catching this week has been very up and down. We have had some very nice weather, calm, clear, and hot. This is nice if you want to go to the beach, but not very nice if you want to catch a lot of fish throughout the day. Water temps are in the upper 80s late in the day, but a bit lower (about 83-84 degrees) in the morning. On top of the too nice weather, the water level in the Lagoon around Sebastian dropped quite a bit over the past week, making fishing many areas difficult if not impossible. As a result, very early mornings and late evenings have by far been the most productive periods. If there were clouds and a chop on the water the bite was good, if it was calm and clear, well, the fishing was tough.
The past two mornings were good, with trout, snook, ladyfish, and jacks providing about 2 hours worth of non-stop action along edges of grass flats and mangrove shorelines. Some of the snook and trout have been large (in the 6 lb range for trout and 10 lbs for snook), but most of the fish are in the 2-3 lb range or smaller. After about 8 am, we have had to hunt for more fish in a bit deeper water that were willing to hit. Soft plastic jerk baits such as the Rip Tide Brand Flats Chub and Weedless Shrimp, and Live shrimp, have made the task of catching late morning and early evening fish easier, but most of these fish have been small. The early morning fish have been taking top-water plugs. I prefer spooks, but poppers also have produced a good number of hits.
As long as the hot water lasts, early and late trips will be the most productive. Reds and the other species are available during mid-day, but they tend to be hard to come by at times. Concentrate on cover such as docks, mangroves, and deeper water and use soft plastic jerk baits, live shrimp, or live pig fish. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
