Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
I know this is getting repetitive, but the fishing this week was pretty much the same as last. The weather got a bit rough side here and there, but early mornings and late evenings provided some good action for trout and snook, and ladyfish and jacks were all over the place along with a few blue fish.
The trout and snook have been located in shallow water, sometimes less than a foot, around schools of glass minnows, mullet, and greenies. Most of these areas have been grass flats, but sandy humps and mangrove shorelines also have held fish. Top-water plugs (spooks and popper) worked vigorously when the water was choppy, or with a little more finesse when calm, have produced well early and very late in the day. Rip-Tide Brand jerk baits have produced well during the late mornings and early evenings. After the trout and snook have shut down I have moved out into deeper water along the edges of flats to keep the action going. Jack, ladyfish, bluefish, and a few trout have been hanging in these areas all day long. These species are not good table fare, but they sure are fun to catch.
If you want to get your kids out and have some fun, get some frozen shrimp, or live if you can find any, small circle hooks (no. 4 light mutu, Owner Brand), and a light rod. Find a deep drop off near an island and float the shrimp under a small float. Anchor up wind of the island and let the float drift the shrimp up to the island. I won’t be long before a snapper or small trout takes the bait. With the circle hook you do not have to worry too much about gut hooking the fish and the kids do not even have to set the hook, just start reeling when the float goes under. Try it, it is great fun! Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
