Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report- Sebastian Area
Sorry about missing a week but a virus got me and it was impossible for me to do anything on my computer until a few days ago. Just shows that virus protection software does not stop all viruses. The fishing over the past two weeks has been inconsistent. One day we do very well and the next we struggle for just a few strikes. Periods around high tide have been the most active, with some low tide periods producing almost no action. This morning, with all the holiday traffic and low tide the lagoon seemed to be almost devoid of fish. Mom told me there would be days like today. Fortunately, they are few and far between. At least I hope I do not have another day like today for a long time. Even the ladyfish and jacks were tight-lipped.
Anyway, when the fish have been feeding they have been taking top-water plugs and Rip Tide Brand jerk baits and weedless shrimp (new penny has been the best color). Live shrimp have been producing some nice snapper and smaller trout. Early mornings have been best for top-water action on shallow flats and along mangrove shorelines for trout, snook, and a very few reds. Soft plastics have been effective during mid-mornings in deeper water along the edges of flats and along shorelines for trout. Try floating live shrimp around islands and in deeper water off flats for some snapper and smaller trout. Top-water plugs also have been taking some nice snook along deeper mangroves during mid and late mornings, but do not expect non-stop action, just a few fish here and there. Up until the last two days the jacks and ladyfish have been very abundant and happy to strike top-water plugs presented along deep edges of flats.
Hopefully the traffic on the lagoon will die down quickly after the holiday and we will get into a better tide pattern. When this happens the catching should pick up. It won’t be long before cooler temps arrive and the bait run starts. I always look forward to the fall and early winter. Until then, we will have to do with early morning and late evening feeding spurts. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
