Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report - Sebastian Area
Well, this week was a good week for snook and trout. The water is still up very high, visibility is poor, and there is still a ton of bait in the river. The snook have been hitting mullet. We took 8 snook to 12 lbs this morning in about 2 hours of fishing while floating live finger mullet. Nope, not in the Inlet, but along deserted (i.e., not another fishing boat in sight) mangrove shorelines and islands. We just worked our way down the shorelines holding snook and waited for a fish to show itself. After we pinpointed fish we present our struggling mullet and it was not long before we were hooked up. I am using Owner mutu light circle hooks to greatly reduce gut hooking. I love these hooks. They are sharper than any other hooks I have ever seen and they hook just about every fish in the mouth. Having a very sharp hook is always important, but it is of maximum importance when you are using a circle hook. Snook have been active just about all day long, but early mornings, early afternoons, and late evenings have been especially good.
Trout have been active over the flats and around islands during most of the day. Most of the fish are holding around pods of glass minnows. Find the minnows and you will find trout. Most of the 15 fish we took this late morning and early afternoon were legal size or larger. We took all of our fish on 1/32 oz. jigs with green twister tails. Yep, really light jigs that provide a really slow fall rate. If you decide to try it, be careful, fight the fish with a very light drag because these jigs do not have a very large hook and you can bend or pull them out. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
