Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
The fishing conditions this past week were not what you would call optimal. The wind blew between 15 and 20 mph most of the week, with passing showers. This made fishing how and where we wanted impossible at times. However, we still caught some fish including trout, blue fish, flounder, and grouper.
When the winds were not too bad we were able to target trout to 5 lbs over grass flats on the lee side of the Lagoon and spoil islands. These fish took top-water plugs, Rip-Tide Brand weedless shrimp, and jigs with twister tails. The blue fish were using the same general areas as the trout and at times would not leave the top-water plugs alone. Not a bad problem to have.
When the winds got too strong to drift comfortably we anchored up along the Intercoastal Waterway and fished live mullet along the break. We were able to entice a bunch of Gags and reds to 20 inches and lost some very large fish. We used medium to heave circle hooks to minimize the number of gut hooked fish. The bonus when fishing mullet along these areas is the flounder you catch. We boated some nice fish. Speaking of flounder, some fish are showing up in the Inlets as they prepare to move out to open water to spawn. This flounder migration will only get better as the Fall and Winter progress. Drifting with jigs is the way to catch numbers of these tasty fish. If you want the doormats then use live mullet or mud minnows on a bottom bouncer rig.
Hopefully, the wind will calm down a bit and make the fishing a little easier. Until next time Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
