Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area

The wind has been up and down. We have been catching fish no matter what the conditions even if moving from area to area has been a bit bumpy at times. Trout, flounder, and a few snook have made up most of our catches. Lady fish and jacks also have been cooperative in some areas. Some of the Lady fish we have caught in the past few days have been around 4 pounds. These fish are a ton of fun to catch.

Trout season is closed, but they are available for catch and release. The trout are in relatively shallow water where there is broken grass and bait present. Jigs have been by far the most productive including Rip Tide Brand weedless shrimp rigged with a ¼ oz jig head. Work the jigs at various speeds over the flats and get ready. At times we have been getting hit on just about every cast. Most of the fish are 15 inches or so, but a few each trip have been in the 3-4 pound range.

The flounder are in the Inlet. Most of the fish are around the 12-inch mark, which is the minimum legal size. One in every 10 or so is 14 inches or bigger. These fish provide a good amount of meat and are some of the best table fare you can ask for. I drift the Inlet in about 10 feet of water using ¼ oz jigs with green twister tails. They must be work bouncing off the bottom. If you are not getting the jigs to the bottom you will not catch very many flounder. Work the jigs bouncing them along the bottom with a very abrupt jigging action and you will catch a lot of flounder. More than you will catch with live bait!

The snook I target are along shorelines and on the flats. These fish have been taking live mullet and top-water plugs.

The ladyfish and jacks have been frequenting the same areas as the trout and taking the same lures. If you want to catch a bunch of fish, now is the time to get out and wet a line, so go for it. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all!

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
