Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
April 21, 2005
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Fishing Report-Sebastian Area

The wind finally stopped blowing long enough to get out and do some serious fishing. The water temp is still a bit cool (67 degrees) early, but by afternoon it has been warming to around 72 degrees. Top-water action has been pretty good early and fair throughout the day due to the cool temps. Most of the top-water action is coming from trout, but a few reds have also been interested. A few of the big females have been showing up. Of course we always release these fish because the will soon be laying a bunch of eggs that will help our trout fishery stay relatively strong in the coming years. Remember is you kill any trout over 20 inches you probably just killed a female breeder, and by doing so you may hurt your own angling future. Take a picture and put her back. Jacks and ladyfish have added to the top-water fray. By about 9am top-water action has been tailing off, so we have been switching to Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and Minnows to keep the action alive. Yo-Zuri 3Ds also have been working well. Most of the fish are coming in about 2 feet or less of water early and around 4 feet later on. If you want the big fish stay shallow and work soft plastics along the bottom over grass or around docks.

If you are looking for snook, fish deeper docks with soft plastics or the 3Ds. Most of the fish I have been finding have not been very aggressive so a slow presentation accounted for most of the strikes. The snook action should pick up if the water temps can get up a bit higher into the upper 70s.

The weather forecast is for another cold front to come through with high winds and cool overnight temps in the lower 50s. That is pretty cool for this time of year. Fishing will probably remain a bit variable as long as these fronts keep coming through. One day good, the next day slow. Oh well, at least it is not snowing.

Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
