Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
January 8, 2006
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area

The cold air has invaded once again, prior to this chill we were doing well on trout and redfish from around noon on to dark. Earlier in the day (7am to noon) smaller trout and ladyfish were hitting small jigs and live shrimp in deeper water of about 5-8 feet. The larger trout and redfish I have been finding late in the day have been in shallow water of about 1 to 2 feet over mud and areas with scattered grass. These areas are holding bait in the form of crabs and mullet of all sizes. The water in these shallow areas has been very clear so a stealthy approach has been critical to getting close to these fish. Any type of overhand cast has been spooking fish so we have been flipping small jigs and live shrimp to them using underhand motions. These techniques have netted us a few nice fish each trip. No nonstop action, but hey, just seeing the fish you are casting to makes for some great fun if not a bit of frustration. We have been using 1/16 oz jigs with Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and DOA Cals. Hank Brown’s Hook-up jigs with live shrimp and live free-lined shrimp also have been productive.

With this much colder air in place, it is likely that any consistent catching will be relegated to small trout and ladyfish throughout much of the day, with the big fish becoming active only late, after the water has warmed up a bit. This cold weather is not supposed to last long, so if we get temps back into the mid-70s soon, the pattern I described earlier should reemerge. Just fish slow, use smaller lures and baits, especially shrimp imitations, and be as stealthy as possible when looking for the big fish up shallow and you should have some nice catches. If you want consistent action target the smaller trout and ladyfish in the deeper areas. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
