Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
April 20, 2006
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian area

Well the wind has calmed down a bit, so at least we can get out and do some serious fishing. Right after the wind stopped the fishing was slow, but it has picked up dramatically over the past few days. Water temps have continued to climb and are now in the low 80s by the end of the day. Very warm weather is forecast, so it looks like water temps will hold or continue to climb. With this increase in water temps snook have become more active. Lately, we are catching some nice snook each trip. Shallow flats early and late in the day and a bit deeper structure (docks, mangrove shorelines, and island points and drop offs) during mid-day have been the areas holding fish. Top-water plugs (Yo-Zuri ZZ Pop and Hydro Pencil) have produced some awesome explosions early and late, while jigs/softplastics (Rip-Tide Brand Flats Chubs) and suspending hard baits (Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerlings) have netted fish during other times. Trout and redfish have been active as well. We have been catching these fish in the same locations as the snook using the same techniques and presentations. There has been an abundance of bait around lately, including greenies, mullet, pigs and pins, and glass minnows, so at times it has been difficult to get fish to pay attention to our lures. In these cases we have turned to large poppers and spook type baits. These larger lures get the fishes attention and have often lead to more strikes. I suggest using the spooks when the water is calm and poppers when it is choppy. The water also has been very clear so a stealthy approach has been very important. Make long casts to ensure you do not spook fish before you get a chance to put a lure in their vicinity. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
