Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
February 16, 2007
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area

When the weather has been good we have been catching a few nice trout and redfish and number of smaller trout, snapper, and other species. When the weather has been bad it has been very tough to catch anything or even get out on the water. Large trout are hanging around on the shallow flats that still have grass. Some nice trout also have been holding on the drop offs around spoil islands and along certain shorelines. The active redfish we have been finding have been along shoreline grass flats and these fish have been most active when the sun has been out and the wind has been relatively calm. It has been very difficult to find any redfish willing to eat when it has been cloudy and/or windy. Not sure why, but they only seem to want to eat when the weather is really nice.

Both the trout and reds have been taking small soft plastics and shallow diving plugs. When the sun has been out the Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerling has continued to produce. The largest fish of both species have been coming on this lure. The Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and DOA Cal soft plastics rigged on a 1/8 oz jig head have worked well under all conditions. When it has been colder and calm these same soft plastics rigged weedless and worked slowly along the bottom have enticed some nice trout and reds.

Live shrimp also have been effective on the smaller trout, snapper, and a few pompano. The deeper holes around spoil islands and docks have been holding a plethora of species, but the trout and snapper seem to out number everything else. We have been free-lining the shrimp on a small Owner Mutu light circle hook to catch the fish near the bottom of these deeper areas. Place a small split shot about a foot and a half up from the hook to get your offering down to where the action is.

It is getting very cold again and might even freeze overnight. So the roller coaster of weather continues. Hey, all we can do is get out when we can and catch what we can. It is still fun! Until next time Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
