Central Indian River Lagoon

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area

Sorry for the lack of reports over the last couple of weeks, but my life has been very busy lately. I am sure many of you have gone through periods in your life when things gang up on you and you just do not know which way is up. Well, along with fishing and my own family I have had to deal with both my dad and mom being diagnosed with cancer. My dad passed away recently and my mom has been very ill. So, I hope you will bear with me if my reports continue to be a bit sporadic over the next couple of months.

The weather continues to throw us angler’s curveballs. One day the water temp is near 80 degrees and the next week it is down in the upper 50s. One day you are throwing top water plugs for snook and trout and the next you need live shrimp to even get a hit. Ah, so it goes in central Florida in March. Hey, at least it is not snowing and blowing!

As has been the case over the entire winter, we have been catching some nice fish when the winds have been calm enough to allow us to fish decent. Most of the nice trout and reds we have been catching have been along shorelines near docks and around spoil islands. Sheltered canals and mangrove pockets have been producing fish as well during the cold snaps. We have been catching a few small snook too, when the water has been warm enough and the sun has been shining.

Live shrimp free-lined when it has been cold and Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerlings and Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp when the water temps have been in the upper 60s and into the 70s. When it has been really warm we have been able to have some fun with Yo-Zuri ZZ Pops and Banana Boats. Grass still persists on some flats and these areas as well as the docks and islands are holding small baitfish. Backwater areas have good numbers of small mullet and mud minnows. Find these food sources and the fish will be there when the water temps are right.

As water temps warm on through the rest of March and into April fishing will continue to get more consistent. The next couple of months are my favorite for really big trout.

Until next time,

Tight-Lines to all.

Capt. Ron
