Mosquito Coast Fishing Charters

To sum it up in a nutshell, both fishing and catching on the Lagoon coast this week have been hit and miss due to inconsistent weather patterns. On Monday, I ran a scouting trip in the Titusville area with Captain Kevin Mulligan, and the wind was light out of the North. We managed to locate a nice school of breeder redfish, and we located some nice tarpon at the Port St. Johns power plant. The next day, the winds picked up and switched from the south, and the school of reds was nowhere to be found. On the flats, choppy conditions made sight casting difficult, and when we did manage to see fish, they were usually small and high tailing it before we could even get within casting range.

Near-shore and off shore, the entire week was blown out with extreme seas of eight to ten feet. The only happy anglers were those who like to ride those wax-coated long boards. Thankfully, the seas are predicted to start to settle, but we most likely won’t see the 2 to 3 foot mark before Monday.

Today, I fish the inshore waters of the Mosquito Lagoon with two good friends, if you could call it that. The wind was screaming from the south at 15 to 20 knots with a good two-foot chop. The water was dirty and full of weeds, with a good 5-knot current pushing east to west through Haulover Canal. There were also a good number of anglers on the water for a Friday, pre-fishing the “Spring for Spots” tournament scheduled for tomorrow. It will really be interesting to see how the event plays out, because the weather and water conditions will be ugly, ugly, ugly, but that’s why the call it fishing. Good luck to all you hard-core anglers, better you than me.

In closing, Captains Keith Kalbfleisch, Bob Jaspers, and Doug Blanton, have all offered a free full day guided fishing charter to a service man and or woman returning home from Iraq. This is a very generous offer, and is their way of saying thanks to the men and woman who served to protect the freedom we live. If anyone knows of a service person returning home who loves fishing and the outdoors, please contact any of these Captains, or myself, and we will hook you up. Also, Don Ray studios also donated some really nice fishing hats to go along with the adventures.

As always, if you need more information or have questions, please contact me.

Good luck and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
