Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian river Lagoon Coast Fishing Report

Indian River Lagoon Coast Fishing Report, May 16, 2003

Mosquito Coast Fishing Charters

Welcome to the chronicles of Captain Tom Van Horn, affectionately known as Skank, as he ventures on the near-shore and backwaters of the Indian River Lagoon Coast. Traversing the skinny water in his trusted Maverick skiff; “ Three Quarter Time” Skank loves the outdoors, salt air, and life. With the wind in his face and the sun over his shoulder, he seeks adventure on the open water, and the sound of a screaming drag. Each day brings a new crew; sunscreen on their brows, excitement in their blood, as they anticipate the bite. Together they ease away from the dock and out into the vast and beautiful lagoon for a day seaward adventure, tight lines, and trashing fish .

If you read my report from last week, you would know about the bad luck I was experiencing. This week the clouds dissipated with the help of great clients, good friends, ands lot of fish. There’s humor in every bad situation, and looking back, I can only chuckle. This past week I didn’t slay any giant, but we did manage to catch a ton of fish.

On Monday I spent the day on the waters of the Banana Lagoon on a scouting expedition accompanied by my good friend Captain Joey Aloe. Our first stop provided the hottest bite of trout and ladyfish I see this year. The trout were small, but they were hungry and aggressive. Theses fish would have stripped the flesh off of your bones if you stumbled off the deck into the water. We were tossing white plastic grubs on a ¼ ounce DOA Cal jig head with a Woodies plastic rattle insert, and gold DOA shrimp with rattle inserts, and these critters wouldn’t let the bait hit the bottom. After a flurry of action, we made the decision mover south in search of other opportunities. We ended the day stretching our lines on some nice sheepshead caught on fiddler crabs around one of the docks on the west shore.

On Tuesday, I had the privilege of spending the day fishing with two outstanding anglers. Again we didn’t target and mogans, but instead focuses on the trout and ladyfish bite. Don Karchmer and Kenney Fisher have been fishing buddies for many years, and they’ve fished together in many exotic locations worldwide, but seemed happy with the fast and furious action provided by these fish on both spin and fly catching and releasing over 50 fish of five species.. After a day on the water with these guys, I felt like I had known them all of my life. Their tails of there adventures and travels were both captivating and intriguing. After they read this report, they will most likely want to charge me to fish with them next time.

If your are interested in some fast and furious action this weekend, start early (first light), on the Banana Lagoon and look for birds working the schools of glass minnows in the area of Patrick AFB, and remember the small fish you catch today are the monsters of tomorrow. Always practice CPR, Catch, Photograph and Release.

As always, if you need information or have any questions, please contact me.

Good luck and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
