2/14/11 Backcountry Florida Keys Report

Capt. Richard Stanczyk
February 14, 2011
Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well the cold weather the last few days had turned the tarpon off down here, was catching them everday back there! We fished today and the wind had laid down a bit from the other day, and by noon it was gorgeous and had swung around. We caught plenty of spanish mackerel this morning, as well as some snapper and ladyfish. Also caught 3 blacktip sharks, one nice 50 lber, very exciting on light tackle! We also hooked a 'mystery fish' that ran off 200 yards of line (my brand new braid, unfortunately) and then snapped the line. Couldn't throw the anchor to chase him as I had to have my full anchor out to hold bottom in the grass due to the chop. Anyways, made a good fish story! Later in the afternoon we ran in the backcountry in some ditches and caught plenty of trout, jacks, ladyfish, and a few pompano. Have tomorrow or thursday open this week if anyone's interested in going, I've been booking up fast! Tarpon fishing should be getting good again as it warms up, get your days booked now as I've already got half of march, april, and 3/4 of may booked!
