4/13/11 Big Daytime Swordfish in Islamorada, Bud n Marys

Capt. Richard Stanczyk
April 16, 2011
Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

About two months ago I received an email from a German big game fishing enthusiast. His name was Jens Laub. He said he had caught all sorts of big bill fish; blue marlin, black marlin, white marlin, sailfish, but never a broadbill swordfish. I told him I thought if we had a few days to fish, I could get him a few shots. So we left yesterday morning at 7 a.m. in search of his first daytime swordfish. On the very first drop we hook up. After 20 minutes Jens catches a sword about 100 lbs. He was ecstatic, his Florida Fishing Trip was a success! We fish the next couple hours and get a couple of bites, but couldn't keep them on. It's about lunch time now and we drop back down. After a couple of minutes the rod loads up, the 80 lb Tuf Line starts scoping up, and Jens gets in the chair and goes to work. After about 30 minutes I see a splash, I thought it might be a porpoise because there was quite a few around in the area, but then it jumps again, and I realize it's our swordfish, jumping 1000 feet away! I could tell it was a big fat fish. After an hour we get the fish about 20 feet away, get all of our LP lights off, and get a good look at the fish. I tell Jens the fish is over 300 lbs. The fish dives deep, but Jens keeps tight on him, cranking and pumping as much as possible. After 2 hours Jens gets the fish boat side and we sink the gaffs into the big sword. Back at the dock the sword weighed in at 321 lbs! Congrats Jens!
