Flats/backcountry fishing florida keys

Capt. Ted & Donnie Benbow
September 15, 2013
Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is the fishing report for the father and son team of SkinsandFinsCharters.com During the months of August and September the fishing has been pretty good in the islamorada and everglades national park. Close to islamorada up on the flats we are targeting some bonefish, permit and still some smaller tarpon. In our shallow water boat we are able to get up in the ideal flat and wait for these great fighting fish to swim by. The prefered bait is either a fly rod with a crab fly or on the spinning rod a quarter size blue crab on a weightless hook.

Now back in the everglades capt Ted and myself are fishing along the trees and deeper run offs for some black drum and snook. We like to use a buck tail tipped with shrimp and pitch it along the trees waiting for a glimps of life of these great fighting fish! When the mullet is runing threw we also take a jig head and cut a pilchard in half and drift it down the current waiting for the bigger snook to eat. Also in the deep channels the big sharks are bighting! Big bulls, spinners, and Lemon sharks are all great fighters. Ranging in sizes of 5 -15 ft long. These fish put a true test of the anglers skills useing large spinning rods we place cut baits on the bottom and cut several more baits for chum. We'll that's what's been going on down here in the keys want to give it a try? Give us a call till then this is capt Donnie and Ted Benbow asking you to keep it in the shallow grass.

Islamorada Fishing Forecast:

This is the fishing forcast for the florida keys and everglades nation park for Sept- October. Lets get too it, down here in the keys we are expecting it too cool off a little bit alowing us to go out on the calm days and stay out a little longer. In close to the islamorada area the permit and bonefish will be at it's prime. The best bight is early in the morning or late in the afternoon before sunset. Pitching live crabs and shrimp at these crabs alows us to get a good bight going. We like to get up on the flats for the bonefish or right on the edge for the crushtasion loving fish. A true test of any anglers skills these fish are the holy grail of flats fishing. Now in the backcountry the redfishing and snook fishing will be in full swing. Due to the high water we are able to get into places that don't get fished all year. We like to use live baits along the trees or a white and chartreuse jerk bait. This seems to produce a good amount of great fishing! We'll that's what we are looking forward to down here want give it a try give us a call. Till then this is capt Ted and Donnie Benbow asking you to keep it in the shallow grass
